Denial Pattern # 9: Flight into health

"My symptoms are gone, that means I’m cured!"

Historically, the term “flight into health” is used in the description of patients (mental or otherwise) who mimic signs of recovery in an attempt to escape further treatment.  The individuals "clean up their act" temporarily to disguise deeper issues at the root of their behaviors or symptoms.  Rather than working towards a lasting solution, they try to convince themselves and others that they are “cured” and that no further effort is needed.  They cite their sudden disappearance of symptoms as evidence that their problems have gone away without any meaningful effort on their part to resolve them.

They are no longer simply working towards a solution, but that they have already enacted the solution and problem is solved - no further scrutiny is necessary.  They've cleaned up and put it behind them; turned over a new leaf, so to speak.  This type of strategy is essentially an attempt to convince you that they have solved their problems by treating the symptoms rather than the disease.

This strategy is similar in nature to minimum compliance.  However, it differs in that rather than doing the bare minimum to address an admitted problem, the proponent seeks to convince others that the problem simply no longer exists.    However, this strategy is doomed to failure if the underlying problem were systemic and have not been addressed appropriately.
